Time Series Data Collection from Home Energy Monitoring Devices

The NBCC Mobile First Technology initiative (MFTi) implemented a real-time data collection system for industrial collaborator SG2B.com using openTSDB.

Research topics

energy monitoring, time series database management systems, openTSDB

SG2B.com performs real-time analyses of time series data collected from various types of sensors, including home energy and temperature monitors. Their objective is to be able to process such time series data at municipal scale. MFTi collaborate with SG2B to develop a time series data collection service using openTSDB, a scalable time series database management system designed for the Hadoop ecosystem. This effort was synergistic with MFTi's development of a Hadoop cluster.

MFTi also developed custom scripts for SG2B using the Apache Groovy programming language. Groovy is used within some home energy monitoring ecosystems and devices, such as SmartThings, Bidgely, and Aeon.
